Bono Quickly Distances Himself from Rick

Yesterday NewsMax.com ran a story that claimed that U2 was coming to Philadelphia to fundraise for Rick Santorum:

Teaming up with the legendary rock group U2 for a one-night only appearance will be Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.).

The thousand-dollar-a-seat concert has been put together by Sean and Ana Wolfington and will take place at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia in support of Santorum’s re-election, reports NewsMax's James Hirsen.

Wolfington puts it this way: "It's truly appropriate for U2, a band with a purpose, to be involved in a fund-raiser with Senator Rick Santorum, a politician with a purpose. Both men are passionate about what they believe and their faith is very important to them.”

We thought it seemed odd that U2 would put on a concert in a 19,000 seat arena as a political fundraiser for anyone, much less Rick Santorum. And we were right. Here's a statement that DATA issued today:

STATEMENT BY JAMIE DRUMMOND, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DATA (debt AIDS trade Africa), THE AFRICA ADVOCACY GROUP CO-FOUNDED BY BONO:

“It is not uncommon for politicians, from both parties, to organize events at all kinds of music concerts. If any such events take place at a u2 concert, it is without the involvement or knowledge of Data, U2 or Bono. U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politician - they are rock concerts for U2 fans."

So, it seems like Rick has access to a luxury box that he is using during the U2 concert for a $1,000-a-head fundraiser. That's just a little bit different than U2 "teaming up" with Rick Santorum. Perhaps someone close to Rick misrepresented the situation to NewsMax.com?

Rick Santorum is a faithful husband and father of 6 children. He has the courage to stand for what he believes in and at least you know where he stands. He wants to defend his faith, defend innocent unborn children and care for the poor and AIDS victims in Africa. You may not agree with his oppinion but you don't have to curse and degraide him. Remember, he is someones son, husband and father and as a human being he deserves common courtesy. -Joseph

I live in Canada folks, if you think liberalism is so great come move up here where u need to wait months for surgeries, social issues are dragged through the mud and of course morons whos main arguments against conservatives are that '' theyre assholes''. Maybe you should realize something, most Americans support much of what Sen. Santorum has to say, they dont support killing babies willy nilly, they dont support handing a welfare cheque to anyone who wants it, and they care about the past. So... Santorum wanted to outsource his fund-raising?

Well, before this time I didn't know too much about Rick Santorum. But the whole idea that he was implying that he was teaming up with U2 sounds like a really dirty, kind of scandalous, thing to do. I don't really favor trashing people whether republican or not(if I can help it) but that is pretty shitty. It makes you wonder how these people grew up...

Why did anyone think that NewsMax story was correct? I mean, what are the odds that Bono would show up and sing in the pouring rain at the opening of the Clinton Library last November and then, within a year, put himself out there in any way at all for a putz like Rick Santorum? Isn't that called Scalping? If I buy seats at any concert or sporting event and then just because I claim its a fundraiser for raising the awareness of ignorance, I'm still selling the seats for way more than the 15% allowed.
